If you made the bond equal to the price of say 10 peeps to start, I don't see why it would favor those with means any more than the current pay per peep system. Perhaps "bond" is a bad word as it implies a large amount, but I was thinking of a min amount to ensure good behavior.
This should not be dismissed. If Peeple have something at stake they will act better. In an anonymous environment, that something can't always be reputation. If 75% of the community agreed someone was spamming, then their small stake could be burnt.

For those who had never really used metamask or a dapp wallet, it's those steps that may discourage them. I think the need for gas is a good thing and it's so little. But then there are those who just want to hodl EVERYTHING!
HODLing everything is playing the short game. The long game is showing the world that what you're "hodling" is capable of being awesome... which requires use...
Lots of people need to *see* - they don't have infinite imaginations.
User interfaces def need improvement though.

Solution to optimize cheap adoption and spam control is some kind of PoS system (like Casper) where everyone posts a bond in Eth, the amount you can peep is related to your bond amount, and some Validators can forfeit your bond if you spam. No spam, no fee. Obv harder to code.
This is right. Especially on the difficulty of programming front. Let people earn money for identifying spammers and backing legit users.... but it would need some serious money behind it to prevent censorship, wouldn't it. Spam is a little subjective as it is, also.

All is well on my end. Work has been brutal here too. Keep peeping!

Hide all peeps from peepers with no verification or reputation.
As long as all verifications and reputations are on-chian - this could certainly be another viable tool for combating spam.

Upfront cost impacts the ROI of spam but also adoption. Current gas price appears to be hurting use and adoption (based on my reading of the stats). There may be a magic number above free. I love Peepeth and want it to be successful.
I love it too! I do!
I agree with most of your thoughts. I sincerely appreciate all the time you have taken coming up with solutions. Spam bots are going to be an issue. They're hard to fix apparently... micro fees are a tool we have... all I'm saying.
Keep on Peepin!

I just paid USD 19 cents for a batch. Ouch.
Me too! I'm not arguing against getting creative with lowering costs. I'm just reminding that some costs are good - they contribute to thoughtful behavior and deter spam.
If the backend is wide open with no limits - seems like only the frontend users will have rules. Not ideal.
Replying to @abcoathup (0x13ebd3443fa5575f0eb173e323d8419f7452cfb1)
Usage costs won’t stop spam, you will just end up with a large number of spam accounts peeping once or twice.
Usage costs can deter spam - not sure anything can stop it completely. But if it costs a constant .01 to peep - at least it costs *something*. As it stands, without backend limits in place - I guess frontends imposing costs will just force the spammers to bypass the frontends.
Replying to @abcoathup (0x13ebd3443fa5575f0eb173e323d8419f7452cfb1)
Increasing user batch size hurts other front ends, hurting the ecosystem. For other front ends to be successful we need peeps to appear on-chain as quickly as possible.
I can agree with this 100% - sooner things go on chain the better.
As for costs - subscriptions and one-off fees might not be the "fairest" solution or the best deterrent of spam. Somehow being tied to usage seems ideal... so at least infinite abuse will be cost prohibitive.
Replying to @NateStipe (0xd5d560b2e9faddd6796ac777963dd59c42babae2)
If requiring a cost is desired, & as the gas prices are out of Peepeth's control, the only way to reduce the costs would be to 1 - share the costs, like you had mentioned or 2 - increase the batch size from 15. I'm probably missing some more?
I think another option is to fix/set the price of peeping from the frontend directly, and then the platform can carry on with @abcoathup's idea.
Any of those options are better than *free* if you want a thoughtful social media platform with less spam. Just thinking out loud...
Replying to @NateStipe (0xd5d560b2e9faddd6796ac777963dd59c42babae2)
I agree that costs do dissuade spam.I think a concern is that unpredictable and fluctuating gas costs prevent people peeping. While there will always be a certain amount of people who will pay the costs, there are others who would peep less/not at all & mass adoption is a goal
Mass adoption of a platform /unlike/ what already exists is the goal. Permanence is a great feature. But having some (even very small) costs to deter spam is another great feature, imho. If the frontend will consider paying all costs, I'm saying reconsider - just lower the cost.

@abcoathup @bevan @NateStipe Random thoughts. Re: the smart contract backend not being able to limit the batch size, thus opening the platform to a "fire-hose" of spam despite Peepeth's frontend goals, etc... seems less than ideal, imho. Less costs is great - no cost is not.
If the frontend pays to save transactions to the blockchain every 5 minutes (as long as there are x number of peeps). Then, the next day, maybe the users who peeped should be responsible for paying their share of the costs before they can peep again.
Costs are a feature.

Hmm - am on day two of working with peepeth and I love the concept, but I find the transaction fees to be a bit high to leverage as a daily twitter replacement. Should be equivalent to dust essentially imo.
Agree.
This is an issue that manifests itself when the Ethereum network gets congested. A month or two ago you could save a batch of peeps for less than a cent USD. A (temporary) countermeasure could be @Bevan raising the batch size...lots of dApps don't have such flexibility.

Having to unfreeze a transaction by sending 0 ETH to myself with a higher gas fee but same nonce. I’m sure my parents could work that out. Gas market needs to be abstracted for standard user.
This isn't even trivial to do right now in MetaMask... is it? I've had to do this before as well and it feels like a frustrating "bug" when it's necessary.
What would this gas abstraction look like? I'm not convinced DApp services paying the gas is ideal either... thoughts?

@bevan .hi can you tell me what means offered enso on a peep? thanks
Enso is like a "super like" - you can only give it to one peep in a 24 hours period. It's scarce. It's less costly than tipping, but also more more limited. Enso is a way to reward a touching/insightful/awesome peep. Use it thoughtfully. :-)

The points are just for fun, anyway. :-)

Someone explain blockchain to me? And remember I am 7
This is simplified, but I tried to take the life of a 7 year old and imagine what blockchain might look like in that environment where paper, pencil and candy are on hand. The bit about when/how you get the candy is a little distorted, but I think the main ideas are all there.

5) Later, it won't matter who is first to solve the math problem. The student will bet among themselves (PoS) who got the tally and finalizing code right. Anyone who got it wrong will lose their bet. Everyone else gets the "candy tax" given by those without notebooks transacting.

4) Since everyone is operating by the same rules, with the same notebooks (protocols) - everyone should always be on the same page with the same results. In case of a discrepancy, everyone goes with what the majority has calculated and carries on.

3) You protect that block from alteration by "sealing" it with a method everyone agrees on and stamping it with a code determined by that process (hash). Most important rule is that you must take into account the code from the last bundle (chain).

2) Because only candy earned in school should count in your school transactions, you add some protections to your ledgers to prevent tampering. At the end of every recess everyone with a notebook bundles all the recorded candy transactions into a group for the day (block).

1) You and your friends get candy when you are first to solve a math problem really quickly - that's mining (PoW). You all keep track of EVERY candy transfer via your notebooks (distributed ledgers) for everyone in the school (network).
