I don't think centralized orgs will be able to compete with decentralized ones in the long run. The structure is expensive. In the meantime, decentralization needs to get better at easily keeping secrets, somehow restoring access to misplaced accounts, and general ease of use.
We need the 10x-100x improvement in usability.
We need scaling.
Decentralised secrets is hard.
Replying to @satsearcher (0x6348dbea8987c27f8462755e493f64d99c28dd05)
I'm not sure I entirely agree with that - centralization is useful for many things & I don't think every company needs blockchain/s. However if you meant that in a sense of "they shouldn't be willfully blind or ignorant to it's use, including in their company", then I agree 100%.
Companies need to be looking at how decentralisation could disrupt their products and services or how it could improve the products and services they use. Not every product or service may need decentralisation but they should be looking where it could.

Not prepared to pay.
Worried about security.
$50 in a mobile soft wallet would allow them to try multiple different dApps, buy some crypto collectibles and some art.
Speculation doesn’t hold much interest to me. Building and using is what I enjoy.

at around this time yesterday, gas price was 16 gwei. scalability needs to get better, soon.
Each product needs to find a way to scale right now. This is my suggestion for Peepeth. https://medium.com/p/dfe567d23e54?source=linkShare-3b0c0066557a-1526688672
Scaling for Ethereum will come eventually.
Incentives matter.
Peepeth (@bevan) is monetised through paid verification and a % share of tips.
Verification means encouraging peepers to verify, staking their reputation.
Tips means encouraging quality peeps.
Other platforms have very different incentives.

Thanks. I'm not a coder or developer, but I like understanding the concepts behind all of this... can I call it Web 3.0 or is that a faux pas? But I think I represent a demographic that needs to get involved for widespread adoption to occur.
Peepeth needs to be as easy as Facebook to use.
Ether payments need to be as easy as Apple Pay.
We need 10x improvement on usability along with scaling.
I think Peepeth is the best dApp I have used so far and there is still more to improve.

I totally agree with the monetization aspect, but there are other ways too, like fees or treasury systems. I think a lot of things could just be handled with ETH instead of a token that has essentially the same properties. From a user perspective, for example, why use $BAT?
Definitely. Not all tokens are useful and not all tokens are necessary.
Though I think some are.
I am all about use.

Just been exploring peepeth for a couple hours and love it. It is reigniting my interest in technology and my faith in ETH. (I'm sorta an old guy.) I now just need to change my handle. It's just too.... something.
You can change your username in settings. (Though not very often)

i would subscribe (yearly/quarterly/monthly; whatever). i know not everyone is in the same boat, though. in a "free period" the amount of actions/posts could be limited even further, no? spam seems inevitable but perhaps a little is worth an overall solution to cost.
I want 100k+ peepers. There will be spam. Though there will be ways to address it.
We early peepers are setting the culture.

My theory is that a bond (which absent spamming means no real cost to user) is less a barrier than pay-per-peep.
Having any Ether is currently a barrier.
MetaMask has ~1 million users currently.
Peepeth could have 100 million peepers.

Another great thing about Peepeth: no ICO, no useless ERC 20 token
Projects need to monetise. Developers need to eat and pay rent/mortgages.
I suggested an ERC721 subscription token. 😀
I believe that tokens can be useful. (Unfortunately there are examples where they are not).

HODLing everything is playing the short game. The long game is showing the world that what you're "hodling" is capable of being awesome... which requires use... Lots of people need to *see* - they don't have infinite imaginations. User interfaces def need improvement though.
Use is key. Use everything.
Replying to @CallMeGwei (0x285bc660aa42b8effc6c60357cd4d8ca072be625)
This should not be dismissed. If Peeple have something at stake they will act better. In an anonymous environment, that something can't always be reputation. If 75% of the community agreed someone was spamming, then their small stake could be burnt.
Having any ETH is a barrier currently too unfortunately.
Reputation has value. You could start with zero or you could start at x. Bad behaviour loses, good behaviour gains.

You may want to create a separate Peepeth account for yourself. One personal and one for mokens. @bob and @deeznutstoken is a good example.
Mokens needs branding and artwork.

Solution to optimize cheap adoption and spam control is some kind of PoS system (like Casper) where everyone posts a bond in Eth, the amount you can peep is related to your bond amount, and some Validators can forfeit your bond if you spam. No spam, no fee. Obv harder to code.
I like a bond but it then becomes a barrier to adoption.

Great Nate! I'm loving Peepeth. I think batching the actions/posts is brilliant.
Just wait until the front end batches on your behalf.
Replying to @NateStipe (0xd5d560b2e9faddd6796ac777963dd59c42babae2)
It's interesting that gas prices in increments of pennies (even @ current levels) are preventing a wider adoption. Even if you assume a .10 USD avg batch cost, it's only 130 bucks & that's for about ALL of the Peeps submitted to date ($1.60 for my 250 peeps over 2 months)
When safe gas price was below 1 gwei it was much less of an issue.
When I started peeping, batch didn’t work on mobile so I paid per peep.
Replying to @CallMeGwei (0x285bc660aa42b8effc6c60357cd4d8ca072be625)
Usage costs can deter spam - not sure anything can stop it completely. But if it costs a constant .01 to peep - at least it costs *something*. As it stands, without backend limits in place - I guess frontends imposing costs will just force the spammers to bypass the frontends.
Hide all peeps from peepers with no verification or reputation.
Replying to @CallMeGwei (0x285bc660aa42b8effc6c60357cd4d8ca072be625)
Me too! I'm not arguing against getting creative with lowering costs. I'm just reminding that some costs are good - they contribute to thoughtful behavior and deter spam. If the backend is wide open with no limits - seems like only the frontend users will have rules. Not ideal.
Upfront cost impacts the ROI of spam but also adoption.
Current gas price appears to be hurting use and adoption (based on my reading of the stats).
There may be a magic number above free.
I love Peepeth and want it to be successful.

Why was the number 15 chosen for a batch? Why not 100 for a batch?
I don’t know why 15.
Large enough for some batch saving but small enough so batches were saved regularly.

More information in the about webpage: https://mokens.io/about The progressive pricing rewards early adopters and makes it easier to sell mokens at a profit on cryptocollectible exchanges like OpenSea and RareBits.
Mokens works fine on mobile, (apart from image upload where you have to close the dialog after uploading). Should have mobile (Trust due to Rinkeby) promoted as an option as well as MetaMask.
I wasn’t clear on what the attributes were used for.

I think another option is to fix/set the price of peeping from the frontend directly, and then the platform can carry on with @abcoathup's idea. Any of those options are better than *free* if you want a thoughtful social media platform with less spam. Just thinking out loud...
I just paid USD 19 cents for a batch. Ouch.
Replying to @CallMeGwei (0x285bc660aa42b8effc6c60357cd4d8ca072be625)
I can agree with this 100% - sooner things go on chain the better. As for costs - subscriptions and one-off fees might not be the "fairest" solution or the best deterrent of spam. Somehow being tied to usage seems ideal... so at least infinite abuse will be cost prohibitive.
Usage costs won’t stop spam, you will just end up with a large number of spam accounts peeping once or twice.

User control of what you can see will be massively important.
New will be the firehose including good and bad.
You may want a verified stream or a badge stream.
You may want to hide any peep with a peeper reputation less than x.

You could add a user cost. Either a one off fee or a subscription. I liked an annual subscription but to get user adoption you would need a free period which then allows spam.

If requiring a cost is desired, & as the gas prices are out of Peepeth's control, the only way to reduce the costs would be to 1 - share the costs, like you had mentioned or 2 - increase the batch size from 15. I'm probably missing some more?
Increasing user batch size hurts other front ends, hurting the ecosystem.
For other front ends to be successful we need peeps to appear on-chain as quickly as possible.

Quick question. When I go to post, it gives me the option to attach a picture. Is that going on the blockchain? Isn't that expensive? Couldn't I just use a URL to a picture in the cloud? Be kind. Thanks.
Your peep plus any image is stored in IPFS, with only the IPFS hash stored as a transaction input.

It’ll be interesting to see whether social media you pay for is as addictive as “free” social media. What if it is, and it becomes the only model out there? (Could both of those things even be true at the same time?)
I think we will see competing models.
Peepeth front end is paid through a percentage on tips and fees for validation, though a competing front end could use advertising.
