Jury duty is also very easy to get out of. Work and financial reasons are never questioned or checked. Everyone who wants out gets out. Those who are left have nothing better to do, or specifically, want to be on a jury for a reason that might be good or bad. I find it terrifying

There is a specific kind of person that they want on the jury, and it isn't necessarily the informed individuals. For example, simply knowing what jury nullification is will get you rejected, even though it is recognized by the Supreme Court to be completely legal.

I have not served. I am against the notion of using untrained individuals to determine someone's fate. I've heard too many personal accounts of biased and racist individuals making it past jury selection.

Did you knw? In 2009, a woman was fined $1.9 million for illegally downloading 24 songs. $80000 per song.

I don't remember if I heard of this case specifically. There were many. Behind the scenes, the RIAA always settled for a much lower amount or dropped the cases entirely. It was just a scare tactic.

I don't see how UBI could work as an improvement in today's world. I've known far too many people who would completely stop working if there was any possible way for them to just freeload off others. It will free up a few to innovate, but they are the far minority.

In tomorrow's world, with complete automation of many industries, I don't know if there is any realistic way around it without society crumbling. It's very much a case of finding the least damaging solution, and UBI might be it.

Very interested in the concept of UBI lately. Been doing my own research but interested to hear others' thoughts. Could we respect people who live off a universal basic income? What could it change about society? (This should go without saying but, please keep convo civil!) >_>

It would be nice to create a copy of The Internet Archive (https://archive.org/) on #ipfs + #blockchain (for versioning).

I suspect that could become prohibitively expensive once IPFS starts charging when they shift to Filecoin.

Mar 28, 2019 04:09

Having a small cost associated with posting might make it cost prohibitive for bots... or would it? Some of these botnets may have political backing, and therefore may actually be able to sustain higher costs than an average user is willing to pay. 🤔

Let me also throw in another alternative approach (that additionally allows remote syncing): develop against Dropbox, Onedrive, or another x-platform storage container on MachineX, build/run/deploy on MachineY. 🖥🐧💻

That would definitely work. You would introduce several seconds of lag before the compile starts though.

I may yet revert to this method, which is my default way of doing things. Thought I'd try Linux baremetal once more... maybe this time... it'll be ready for the desktop... right...? 😹 Sigh.

I don't blame you for trying. If it works for you, keep using it. If Linux is ever to be desktop ready it certainly needs people to support it.

In what ways, specifically was it lacking? If you're using a virtualized linux machine for "most development" why not just use a windows vm for the things that are lacking on linux? Just curious. Appreciate any pro tips! :-)

If price wasn't a concern, I'd use a Mac Pro. Since it does matter, I use a custom PC with Win 10. I run a Linux VM on my server which has an open file share for dev files. The result is I develop using the Windows desktop, but everything is compiling and being served from Linux.

Even though the desktop is lacking, the Linux developer experience is superior. MacOS is a beautiful middleground, which is why Macbooks are so popular for development. However, a Mac Pro is very expensive to the point where you can build a more powerful PC for 1/3 the cost.

Linux is the best option for servers and console functionality but the desktop just doesn't work as well as Windows or MacOS. I won't try to address specific topics because others have already done a much better job. http://bit.ly/2TAUpjn

Much like me! 😹 I prefer baremetal Windows, but nowadays am booting to Linux (we'll see how long that lasts!). To be fair the Linux setup so far has been absolutely painless, especially if you're familiar with node, npm and friends.

I tried using the Linux desktop for development again a little over a year ago, and it was still lacking. Right now I run a Windows desktop and I use virtualized Linux on my server for most development.

I'm still reading on Cosmos, but it doesn't sound at all like an Ethereum killer. It sounds like something different that has inherent strengths and weaknesses. Either way, more good for the ecosystem.

It looks to me that an archival node is so huge because it stores the full state of the chain incrementally. With a full node, you don't have all states, just the current state. If I understand this correctly, the data in an archive node can be generated from a full node.

However, I'm still unclear on if an archival node is required to view the full history in the case a reorganization occurred.

Layer-1 scaling method makes full node's abandon very heavy. Even now the full node of Ethereum costs 2 TB of space. With 1000~2000 TPS, the blockchain will grow much faster than before, so the counts of full node will drop dramatically, making the blockchain network vulnerable.

I see the Ethereum blockchain as under 150GB right now. https://twitter.com/ethnodesize

Sharding should help a lot with L1 scaling, but L2 solutions are definitely needed. Micro and nano transactions require a system with overhead near zero; impossible with 100% on-chain.
