Bro. I'm pretty sure you can't reserve names on a site like this.
I actually advocated that @Bevan would reserve some rather than letting random people squat and sell them... not his cup of tea.

Happy to see it.

I was thinking specifically of Gab but I was hesitant to name it. It's a bit of a dumpster fire if you ask me.
Well, now... that's a very kind description!
(From what I've heard others say.)

Hopefully Steemit has published some research in that area. TBH I’d rather receive spam than have an algorithm attempt to control what I see and don’t see.
You should have that choice - and other people should be able to dial up the algo/mods. One size fits all shouldn't be a thing when it comes to information delivery.

YES! We are interested. I'll be sure to link to you in my (eventual) article on gas for those who prefer video.

Interesting. Hope this place turns out to be a better alternative to Twitter than other attempts.
I think it's off to a good start. Lots of sharp people showed up early, and that may help the brainstorming process around here if/when issues arise.
Welcome!

I get the joke. But whatever you do please don’t do what Twitter did otherwise I wouldn’t be here. Censorship of speech is unacceptable and it’s my belief Peepeth can go much further than Twitter if it focuses on: 1. Positive reinforcement. 2. Keeping it fucking real.
Don't worry - unless I roll-my-own frontend I don't have much say about Peepeth policies, lol. Dealing with spam will be a thing - and hopefully it is very granular in most cases. I am a little excited to see how it all evolves though...

Who said there's no honesty among scammers? https://ponzischeme.io/
There have been all kinds of "honest" scams popping up lately. Quite a few of them have "accidentally" lost user funds to "hacks" - I advise people against participating...
Is regular crypto market volatility not enough, you thrill seekers? ;-)

@callmegwei Do you have anything that explains gas? I looked on your site but didn't see it and wondering if I missed it somehow.
Can you let me know if it makes things crystal clear, or if you still have any questions? @tay and @spence would probably also be interested in the feedback.

(4) The site has been slow to "ramp up". Other obligations get in the way. The community support keeps me going - that and the fact that I truly want this tech to take over the world.
It's easier to write when you feel like you're making a difference.
Your support means a lot.

(3) In reality, building a site that generates revenue takes a long time. And probably more content than a lone author can create - assuming he has high standards. After an awesome and quite unexpected donation of 5.5 ETH from Vitalik shortly after I started six months ago...

(2) I had been distilling what I was absorbing about the space anyway for family and friends. I decided to devote myself to helping people "get it" - why crypto was about so more than speculation. In my dreams, I get to do this work exclusively, I love it.

Welcome @boris! The cool thing about peeps is in their permanence versus the fleeting nature of tweets. It takes some getting used to, but the lack of a delete and edit button may be incentive to craft more thoughtful content rather than the mindless splatter seen other places.

Great! Multiple front ends is not quite the same thing as federation (like Mastodon). We'll have to see what evolves where there is "centralization" of data on the central Ethereum chain where federation isn't needed.
I knew you'd come around...
Just kidding - hey, it's going to be interesting to see how it plays out, no matter what. In the meantime we can all have some good discussions about the space.

Same opp cost for scalable web app devs in the early 2000s. I am not saying Peepeth is bad -- I am saying the way forward as a single site with lots of users is unlikely, so what can be done to federate, like Mastodon. Lowering the cost - it's open source?
The smart contracts will be open source. The goal is multiple front ends sharing users, content, etc. (and logins - since controlled by wallets).
Check out Peepeth.com/front_end
There has already been alt POC front end written:

Zero barrier to entry to someone building yet-another-twitter clone. What reason other than "it's on the blockchain" and early adopter usage? Tweet length content tends to be very ephemeral, so it has less reason to be on a blockchain than other systems
Anyway, glad to have you Boris. Every community needs it's fair share of skeptics!

The more frontends sharing that backend - the more valuable it gets.
Reasons? Less spam and higher quality content if all goes well. Not to mention the possibility of taking some power away from the current social media behemoths and increasing competition in the space.

The barrier to entry is not zero - ask @Bevan how many hours it takes on the backend. Opportunity cost alone for solidity devs is high. He is lowering the cost of building out future clones - and in so doing providing some strong incentives to share backends between projects.

i had read about akasha some months ago but never joined the beta (there was tons of noise about, well, just about anything and everything back then and i was merely stumbling around trying to make sense of it). can you expand on why you think *this* platform may not last?
I'd like to hear it, too, @boris
The app I had to install/run to use Akasha kinda turned me off. I, personally, have great optimism for a network of Twitter clones sharing an open data store.

There's a part of me that sort of wishes you would... as a reporter, I'd love to see someone successfully run micropayments cc: @callmegwei
I think we need scaling, honestly. Peepeth is cheap for many, especially given the gas costs lately - but it needs to be even cheaper for a large part of the world. This is doubly true if you're going to skim a little off every transaction to fund the site.
It will get there.

Up-voted. So the monetization model for Peepeth is ultimately to charge folks a tiny amount as they use it, right? That seems totally fair and also pretty interesting, from a micro-payments standpoint
Hopefully @Bevan chimes in, but the monetization model is still being expanded, I think. So far Peepeth takes 10% of tips on the site, the fee for verification on Twitter also generates revenue - as do "founders" badges, which are given out for donations of 1+ ETH...
Replying to @james (0xb89465f04caf9334d3d116637ac2a9c4aa8dcff6)
Sidechains are super cool but mostly allow for value generated in a network (e.g. tips, tokens) to be captured and transferred to the main chain. The actual content (e.g. posts) stored on a sidechain would not be as secure as content anchored directly on Ethereum.
Thank you for that, @james. I was considering the implications of these developments. If a sidechain dApp is not quite as secure - could it be "secure enough"? I have no idea... I suppose it depends primarily on the cost differential? Tell us more!
